July 24, 2017- Flood Response at North Lakhimpur- A Compassionate and Comprehensive Relief Operation.
In response to the devastating floods that ravaged parts of North Lakhimpur, Priyobondhu carried out an immediate and comprehensive flood relief initiative to assist the affected communities. The flood response covered five distinct areas within North Lakhimpur, impacting over 171 families in total. The initiative, which included a substantial 2 ton shipment of relief materials, aimed to provide vital aid to families who had lost their homes and possessions to the floods.
Areas Covered-
1. Bowalguri Jorhatia- Beneficiaries 36 families
2. Bogolijaan Jorhatia- Beneficiaries 7 families
3. Hatilung Beneficiaries 31 families
4. Bogolijaan Chariali- Beneficiaries 9 families
5. Bogolijaan: Beneficiaries- 88 families
Relief Materials Distributed-
The 2 tons of relief supplies were carefully selected to meet the essential needs of the affected families. The package included-
1. Staple food items such as rice, pulses, wheat flour, sugar, milk, and jaggery to sustain families in the immediate aftermath of the floods.
2. Hygiene and sanitation products, including sanitary napkins, female undergarments, soaps, and bleaching powder, ensuring that basic needs were met and dignity maintained, especially for women and children.
3. Clean drinking water was prioritized with water filters, buckets, and mugs, ensuring families could access safe water despite the flood’s contamination of local supplies.
4. Emergency shelter and protection with tarpaulins to offer some semblance of shelter from the elements and candles for light in the absence of electricity.
5. Medical supplies, including basic medicines, were distributed to address health concerns arising from the flooded environment.
6. Mosquito coils and phenols were provided to minimize the risk of vector-borne diseases, which tend to surge during floods.
7. Non-perishable food items such as flattened rice, biscuits, puffed rice, and potato helped ensure that families could feed themselves in the days following the floods.
Community Empowerment and Care-
Alongside the distribution of essential materials, Priyobondhu worked tirelessly to ensure that no one was left behind. Every family, regardless of their size or circumstance, received aid that catered to their immediate needs for survival, health, and dignity. The floods affected not only the physical infrastructure of these communities but also the psychological well being of the families, many of whom lost their homes and possessions.
The efforts also involved on-the-ground monitoring and follow-up assistance to assess the continuing needs of affected individuals. The response was designed to empower the most vulnerable, particularly women and children, providing them with access to life-saving supplies, as well as a sense of hope and solidarity during this traumatic time.
Moving Forward-
Priyobondhu’s flood relief operation was a beacon of hope for the residents of North Lakhimpur, showing the power of community care in the face of adversity. It also served as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and the need for swift, compassionate responses to natural disasters.
As we look toward long-term recovery, efforts will continue to focus on rebuilding the lives of these families, addressing not just the immediate material needs, but also supporting their physical, emotional, and psychosocial well being as they work to restore their homes and livelihoods.
