May 28, 2017- Menstrual Hygiene Management Awareness Program at Dharigaon, Jorhat – World Menstrual Hygiene Day, May 28, 2017-
On May 28, 2017, in commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, Priyobondhu spearheaded a transformative awareness program on menstrual hygiene management in Dharigaon, Jorhat, which encompassed three adjoining villages- Dharigaon, Doh Kukurasuwa, and Garowal Sungi. This initiative was meticulously crafted to foster open dialogue about menstruation, break longstanding taboos, and underscore the critical importance of proper hygiene practices during menstruation.
Inaugural Address and Expert Insight:
The session commenced with an enlightening keynote address delivered by Archana Borthakur, the visionary Founder of Priyobondhu, who passionately articulated the need for progressive societal change surrounding menstrual health. Archana emphasized the importance of dismantling societal taboos, educating communities, and empowering women and girls with the knowledge to take control of their menstrual health.
The program also featured a dynamic and interactive session led by Dr. Binoy Kumar Borah, Assistant Professor at JMCH, who provided an invaluable discourse on the physiological aspects of menstruation, the significance of maintaining menstrual hygiene, and the need for timely medical intervention in case of health complications. Dr. Borah’s session was further enriched by Dr. Jyotirmoy Sarma, PRCA, JMCH, whose expertise offered additional clarity on women’s health issues, menstrual cycles, and safe practices.
Distribution of Hygiene Kits-
In a concerted effort to ensure practical support, a complete hygiene kit, including sanitary napkins and women’s innerwear, was thoughtfully distributed to 175 girls and women in attendance. This gesture was designed not only to provide immediate relief but also to empower the recipients by giving them the necessary resources to maintain their menstrual health in a dignified and hygienic manner.
The event proved to be a pivotal moment in the effort to challenge and change the narratives around menstruation in rural communities. By providing both education and essential products, this initiative sought to foster long-term impact, encouraging healthy practices and promoting self-confidence among the women and girls in these villages.
This program is a reflection of Archana’s unwavering dedication to the holistic development of women and girls, ensuring that they not only have access to the resources they need but also the knowledge to navigate their health with confidence and dignity. Through this initiative, Priyobondhu continues its mission to create lasting social change, one community at a time.
