With the objective of promoting employment-oriented skill development and encouraging gainful self-employment, especially among women skilled in traditional cooking, Priyobondhu organized the Assamese Traditional Food Competition during the Rongali Festival held from January 19 to 21, 2018 at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, Guwahati, Assam.

The initiative aimed to empower traditional food artisans by motivating them to commercialize their culinary skills and transform household knowledge into sustainable livelihood opportunities, rather than confining these skills to domestic spaces.

The competition was conducted across three thematic categories over three days, witnessing enthusiastic participation from skilled cooks across the region-

  1. Assamese Traditional Sweet Dishes (Jalpan) - January 19, 201822 participants

  2. Assamese Traditional Vegetarian Dishes - January 20, 201823 participants

  3. Assamese Traditional Non-Vegetarian Dishes - January 21, 201826 participants

The dishes were evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges comprising Smt. Hiranmoyee Goswami, Shri Rajib Bora, Smt. Jumi Ahmed, and Smt. Geeta Dutta, who assessed entries based on authenticity, taste, presentation, and adherence to traditional cooking methods.

Assamese Traditional Vegetarian Dishes - 23 Participants

Assamese Traditional Non-Vegetarian Dishes - 26 Participants

The competition not only celebrated Assam’s rich culinary heritage but also served as a platform for women empowerment, livelihood promotion, and preservation of traditional food practices, aligning with Priyobondhu’s mission of inclusive community development.
